The shortlist is drawnbefore anyone contacts you.
Long cycles, several people in the room, and a first list of suppliers now assembled by a model on a Tuesday afternoon by someone whose name you will never see. If you are not on that list, you never find out you were considered.
Nobody fills in a form to be shortlisted
In a considered purchase the first pass is now delegated. Someone junior is asked to find five firms who do this, and they ask a model. What comes back is a list, and every firm not on it has been removed from the process without ever knowing the process began.
For professional services the model is cautious, and rightly so. It is answering a question where a wrong recommendation carries real cost, so it leans hard on signals of credibility that are not controlled by you: professional bodies, trade press, directories, university and association pages, published work with a named human attached.
This is where most firms are weakest. The site says "our team has over 40 years of combined experience" and names nobody. There is no author on any page. The case studies are anonymised to the point of saying nothing. All of that is invisible to a model looking for a reason to trust you.
What we do for a firm
Put names and credentials on the work
A page written by a named person with stated qualifications is a different object to a page written by "the team". This is the single change that most often moves a professional services firm, and it costs nothing but a decision.
Make the expertise legible
Not a list of services. Specific, checkable positions on the questions your clients ask, published under a name, dated, and updated when the answer changes.
Case evidence that survives confidentiality
Most of your best work cannot be named. It can still carry a sector, a size, a problem, a method and a result. An anonymised case with real specifics is quotable. One with the specifics removed is not.
Directory and association presence
Professional bodies, sector directories, regional business listings, trade press. Unglamorous, slow, and the heaviest lever there is, because it is the part a model treats as independent.
One consistent identity
The same firm name, address, description and people across every profile, listing and page. Inconsistency here quietly costs you, because it stops a model resolving that all these mentions are the same organisation.
Questions we get from b2b and professional services clients
We cannot name our clients. Is this pointless?
No, and it is the most common worry we hear. Confidentiality removes the logo, not the evidence. Sector, company size, the problem, what you did, what changed, over what period, all of that can be published and all of it is quotable. Our own case studies work this way.
Does putting real author names on pages matter that much?
For professional services it is one of the highest-return changes available. The model is looking for a reason to trust a recommendation in a field where being wrong is expensive. A named person with stated credentials is that reason. "The team" is not.
Our buying cycle is nine months. How would we ever see this working?
You measure the leading indicator, not the deal. Share of answer against a fixed set of buyer questions moves long before pipeline does, and it tells you whether you are entering consideration sets. We report it monthly with the transcripts, so you can see the change before the revenue arrives.
Is this just PR?
It overlaps with PR and it is not the same job. PR wants coverage. This wants specific, structured, attributable statements in places a model treats as independent, which is a narrower target and a more measurable one. Where you already have a PR function we work with it rather than duplicating it.
We are regulated and cannot make claims. Does that limit this?
It shapes it and does not block it. Regulated firms tend to do well here, because the discipline of only publishing what is defensible produces exactly the kind of precise, verifiable writing that gets quoted. We work inside your compliance review, not around it.
