AI agency for small business

What a smaller budgetcan and cannot buy.

This page exists because the honest answer for a small business is often "do these four things yourself first, then come back". Here is what those things are, what an agency adds after them, and how to tell which one you need.

FitsOwner-run businesses, small teams, first marketing hire
FreeThe audit, and the transcript of what AI says about you
Paid work startsOnly when the free work is done and has run out
First movementTypically 6 to 10 weeks once work starts
What changes

Most of what moves the needle first is unpaid

  • Free audit
  • Do it yourself first
  • Directory listings
  • Reviews
  • Consistent details
  • One good page
  • Minimum programme
  • No long contract

The thing that gets a business named by a model is being mentioned in places the model treats as independent. Directories, review sites, association listings, community answers. Almost none of that requires an agency. It requires somebody to sit down for a few afternoons and do it.

That is an awkward thing for an agency to publish, and it is true. If you have no directory listings, no reviews and inconsistent contact details, paying anyone for content work is paying for the second job before the first one is done. The content will not get quoted, because there is nothing corroborating that you exist.

What a smaller budget cannot buy is speed. This work compounds, and it compounds on a scale of months. Anyone offering a small business a fast result in AI search is either misunderstanding the mechanism or counting on you not checking.

The work

Do these first, without us

  • Claim and finish every listing

Google Business Profile first, then the directories for your trade or sector. Same name, same address, same phone number, same wording, everywhere. Free, and it is the foundation for everything else.

  • Ask for reviews, on a routine

At the moment the customer is happiest, every time, forever. Not a campaign. A habit. This is the single highest-return unpaid thing on the list.

  • Write one page that answers one question properly

The question your customers ask most, answered in plain language, by a named person, with real specifics. One good page beats twenty thin ones, and it is the page that gets quoted.

  • Check what AI says about you now

Ask four engines who you are and what you do. Write the answers down. That is your baseline, it takes twenty minutes, and it will probably tell you something uncomfortable and useful.

  • Then, if you want it run for you

That is where we start: the fixed prompt set, the monthly measurement, the content and the technical work. Our smallest retainer, no long contract, and we will say when we do not think it is worth it yet.

Asked about this

Questions we get from small business clients

What is the cheapest way to start?

The free audit, then the four unpaid jobs on this page. That is the cheapest way to start, and for a lot of small businesses it is also the highest-return work available. We would rather you did it and came back than paid us to do content work on an empty foundation.

Are you the cheapest AI search agency?

No, and we would be careful with anyone claiming to be. This work is people-time: research, writing, technical fixes and monthly measurement. Priced far below that, something is being skipped, and it is usually the measurement, which is the part that tells you whether any of it worked.

Do you lock us into a long contract?

The visibility retainer has a six month minimum, and the reason is mechanical rather than commercial. Third-party corroboration is the slowest and heaviest part of the work, and a three month engagement would end before the thing that matters most had a chance to move. After the minimum it is rolling.

We have almost no budget. What would you tell us?

Do the four unpaid jobs above, keep asking for reviews, and spend nothing else for six months. Then run the four questions again and see what changed. If you want, send us the before and after and we will tell you honestly whether hiring anyone makes sense yet.

Is our business too small for this to matter?

Size is not the test. The test is whether people ask a question your business is the answer to. A two-person firm in a specific niche is often easier to get named than a large generalist, because the question is narrower and there is less competition for the sentence.
